Seaweed Blade Sizing Options:
- 2 undulations: Chain 16 + 4 = 20 chains total
- 3 undulations: Chain 24 + 4 = 28 chains total
- 4 undulations: Chain 32 + 4 = 36 chains total
- 5 undulations: Chain 40 + 4 = 44 chains total
Step 1: Making First Seaweed
Ch 20 (or any multiple of 8 + 4, depending on your desired length), skip first chain, sl st into next chain, 1 sc into next chain, 1 hdc into next 2 chains, 1 dc into next 3 chains, 1 hdc into next 2 chains, sl st into next chain.
Pattern Sequence:
*1 hdc into next 2 chains, 1 dc into next 3 chains, 1 hdc into next 2 chains, sl st into following chain*. Continue repeating this sequence from * to * until you reach the end of the chain. At the end there will be 1 chain left, work 1 sc into that chain.
If you want to add more blades to your seaweed, do not fasten off after completing the first blade. Simply continue following the instructions to add additional blades as desired.
Note:
- If you wish to create a single seaweed blade, simply chain as many as you like (multiple of 8 + 4) and follow the pattern of Step 1. Break yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
- To lengthen your seaweed blade, add chains in multiples of 8 + 4. This will give you the flexibility to adjust the seaweed's length as desired.
Adding a Second Blade to the Seaweed
After completing the last sc from Step 1, follow these steps to add more blades:
Chain a length that is a multiple of 8 + 4 (e.g. 20, 28, 36, 44, etc.), depending on how long you want your seaweed to be. Continue with the instructions provided in Step 1 to create the second blade.
Step 1, here:
Ch 28 (or any multiple of 8 + 4, depending on your desired length), skip first chain, sl st into next chain, 1 sc into next chain, 1 hdc into next 2 chains, 1 dc into next 3 chains, 1 hdc into next 2 chains, sl st into next chain.
If you want to add more blades to your seaweed, do not fasten off after completing this blade. Simply continue following the instructions to add additional blades as desired.
Note: If you are happy with the number of blades on your seaweed, proceed to the next step (STEP 2).
Adding a More Blades to the Seaweed
After completing the previous blade, follow these steps to add more blades:
Chain a length that is a multiple of 8 + 4 (e.g. 20, 28, 36, 44, etc.), depending on how long you want your seaweed to be. Continue with the instructions provided in Step 1 to create the second blade.
Step 1, here:
Ch 36 (or any multiple of 8 + 4, depending on your desired length), skip first chain, sl st into next chain, 1 sc into next chain, 1 hdc into next 2 chains, 1 dc into next 3 chains, 1 hdc into next 2 chains, sl st into next chain.
If you want to add more blades to your seaweed, do not fasten off after completing this blade. Simply continue following the instructions to add additional blades as desired.
If you are happy with the number of blades on your seaweed, proceed to the next step (STEP 2).
STEP 2: Bottom Finishing Detail
After completing the amount of seaweed blades desired, you can leave it as is, or follow these additional steps to create a more polished finish:
Joining the Blades:
- From where you left off after finishing the last blade, pull up a loop into the bottom of the that last blade created and keep that loop on the hook.
- Repeat this step for the remaining seaweed blades, pulling up a loop into the bottom of each blade and keeping each loop on the hook.
Bringing the Bottom Together:
- For the sample provided, I had 4 loops on your hook (including the initial loop).
- Yarn over and pull through all the loops on the hook. This will bring the bottoms of all the blades together, creating a neat, finished look.
Securing and Finishing:
- Chain 1 to secure the bottom.
- Break yarn, fasten off and weave in ends to complete your seaweed piece.
