Easy Ribbed Crochet Beanie Pattern - Standard Adult
Looking for an easy crochet beanie you can make in a day? This simple ribbed beanie uses half double crochet worked in the back loop for a stretchy knitted look, with single crochet shaping at the crown for a smoother, rounded finish. Add a folded brim and you have a cosy everyday beanie perfect for autumn and winter.
Size: Standard adult, approx. 54-58 cm head circumference
Yarn: Aran / worsted weight
Hook: 4.5 mm

Abbreviations
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
BLO - back loop only
sl st - slip stitch
Note: You can also change colours for a fun look just like in the picture!
Ch 45, or chain until your foundation measures approximately 29-30 cm. This includes enough length for a folded brim.
Row 1
Skip the first chain.
1 sc in the next 6 chains.
1 hdc in each remaining chain.
Ch 1 and turn.
Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
Row 2
Working BLO throughout:
1 hdc BLO in each stitch until 6 stitches remain.
1 sc BLO in the last 6 stitches.
Ch 1 and turn.
Row 3
Working BLO throughout:
1 sc BLO in the first 6 stitches.
1 hdc BLO in each remaining stitch.
Ch 1 and turn.
Repeat
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until your rectangle measures approximately 48-50 cm wide when relaxed.
For a snugger beanie, stop closer to 48 cm.
For a slightly looser fit, go closer to 50 cm.
The fabric should stretch comfortably to around 54-58 cm.
Make It Yours: Add a Mixed-Yarn Effect
For a fun, textured look, you can hold a second, thinner yarn together with your main yarn in selected areas of the beanie.
For example, the sample shown was made using the main white yarn with a strand of DK black yarn added in random sections to create a marled, mixed-colour effect.
Simply join the second yarn wherever you want the mixed look to begin and crochet with both strands held together for as many stitches as you like.
When you want to return to the main colour, drop the second yarn and continue crocheting with the main yarn only.
On the following row, when you reach the dropped strand, pick it up again and hold it together with your main yarn for another section.
If you want the mixed section to move slightly to the left or right from row to row, simply carry the second yarn along the back of your work until you reach the area where you want to use it again.
Continue adding and dropping the second yarn throughout the beanie wherever you like. There’s no set placement, keep it random for a more natural, one-of-a-kind effect.
Join the beanie
Fold the rectangle in half with the first and last rows together.
Slip stitch or sew the two short edges together to form a tube.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail if your end ended up on the sc size, otherwise fasten off and weave in.
Cinch the crown
The single crochet edge is the top of the beanie.
Using your long yarn tail (or attach a strand of yarn to the sc side of about 40cm) and a yarn needle, weave in and out around the entire single crochet edge.
Pull tightly to close the opening.
Go around the opening once more if needed, pull securely and sew it closed.
The shorter single crochet stitches help reduce the bulk at the crown, giving the beanie a smaller, rounder top instead of a large gathered point.
Folded brim
Turn the beanie right side out.
Fold the bottom edge upwards approximately 6-7 cm to create the brim.
You can leave it loose so the wearer can adjust it, or tack it in place at a few points if you want it permanently folded.
