How to make the petals (MAKE 5):

CENTRE OF PETAL

ROW 1

With COLOUR A, make a slip knot and chain 9. Skip the first chain, then work as follows:

  • 1 single crochet into the next chain.
  • 1 half double crochet into the following chain.
  • 1 double crochet into the next 4 chains.
  • 1 half double crochet into the following chain.
  • 1 single crochet into the next chain.
  • Chain 1, cut a 10cm tail, and fasten off.

ROW 2

With COLOUR B, make a slip knot. Turn the centre of the petal upside down and attach the yarn with a single crochet into the bottom of the last single crochet worked in ROW 1.

Working on the right side of the first row, crochet as follows:

  • 1 single crochet into the next 3 stitches.
  • 1 half double crochet into the next 3 stitches.
  • 2 double crochet into the next stitch.
  • Skip the chain 1.
  • On the left side of the first row, work 2 double crochet into the next stitch.
  • Work 1 half double crochet into the next 3 stitches.
  • Work 1 single crochet into the next 4 stitches.
  • Slip stitch into the first single crochet of the right side.
  • Chain 1, cut a 10cm tail, and fasten off.

Repeat these steps to make 3 more petals. For the final petal, leave a 40cm tail before fastening off.

CHART/MOTIF of ROW 2:

Weave in:

Finish off your petals as you prefer. I secured the yarn ends by tying a double knot with the corresponding colours, trimming the yarn close to the knots and applying fabric glue to the ends for added durability and security.

Assembling:

Once you have all 5 petals ready, fold them in half. Using the petal with the yarn attached, thread the yarn into a tapestry needle.

  1. Take the next petal and go through the bottom 2 single crochet stitches, sewing it close to the previous petal.
  2. Repeat this process for the next 3 petals, joining them all together.
  3. At the end, go through the bottom 2 single crochet stitches of the first petal, pull the yarn tight, and secure it by going through a nearby stitch twice.
  4. Fasten off by going through the last loop and pulling it tight.

If you are not adding a bead in the centre, you can now cut off the excess yarn and apply glue to the cut end to secure it. If you're adding a bead to the centre, proceed to the next step using the same yarn end to attach the bead.

Adding bead to the centre of the flower:

Thread the yarn through a thinner needle, one that easily passes through the bead hole. Guide the needle through the centre back of the flower, bringing it to the front. Carefully slide the bead onto the needle and position it closer to the centre of the flower. Return the needle back through the centre of the flower, guiding it to the back. To secure, fasten off by passing the needle through any stitch at the back. Trim the yarn close to the fasten off and apply fabric glue to the end for added durability and security. Once the glue is dry, arrange the petals as desired.
